Week 9

Reflection on the presentation

We have done 30 illustration on Bee and 30 illustration on Chicken on a piece of Mahjong Paper. After doing the presentation , we realised that we have some improvement that can be make.

Here is the list on what we can improve on;

-Darken marker lines
- Add more colours
- Bigger drawings
- Add details to make objects more obvious
- Fill up empty spaces

Our next assignment is on "Why we ask Question?" and "How we ask Question?" . We have to type our answer down on the website called Twiddla. Here is the link.  http://www.twiddla.com/2294460

Below is the screenshots of my contribution on the website.

We are also told to list down series of question that I might want to ask .
Here is my list;

  1. Why must we do homework when home is the place for us to rest?
  2. Why must we have to clean up our bedroom during hari raya when the guest will only sit in the living room?
  3. Why we have to study algebra?
  4. Why there's must be class till late afternoon?
  5. Why we are not allowed to wear ankle socks in primary and secondary school?
Reflection

Do I ask enough question? & Do I think that I ask the right question?

I think that I didn't ask enough question because sometimes when the teachers gave assignment , I still didn't get it but refuse to us. And instead i will usually wait for my friends to ask our teacher the same question and eventually I get the answers from them. After I done some research on asking question, I think that it is really important to ask question because we get to improve on our works and also get to clear our doubts.

I also think that sometimes I didn't ask the right question which leads in getting different answer from teacher. To ask the right question, I have to think first what to ask to make sure people will understand what I was trying to ask. I also have to ask confidently.

Lateral Thinking- Week 7

People nowadays busy with their career. Especially the one who always work from morning till late night and the only time they have a rest is on their weekends. They have no time to clean up the house, sweep or vacuum the floor. As you know , hiring a maid to clean up the house is quite expensive especially in Singapore where you have to settle many bills. Now, there's this new invention called iRobot Roomba Vacuum. All you have to do is just press clean and Roomba will do all the hard work for you, freeing up your time to work on other things or simply enjoy your day. Even though there's vacuum cleaner , but you have to use your energy to clean the house but for Roomba, you can just let it do their work. The advantage of this is , there's no need for you to hunt for Roomba when the job is done. It will charges itself , returning to its Home Base. Roomba also cleans on your schedule you can just set the it.

The different type of cleaning machines:

Here I'm going to show you the process of doing our group work. This group work helped us on thinking something different. Something that is outside the box. We as a group also learn to illustrate something that is very interesting and at the same time having a lot of fun when doing this activity.

We have to illustrate 30 reasons on "What would you do to your neighbour's chicken which always wandering into your garden?" and "Why does the bee attracted to the painting of flower instead of the real flowers?"

We list down before illustrate
Focussing on our work

30 Illustration on bee
5 Interesting Points of the Bee:

-The bee have to use the maze to reach to the rose, and it's a lazy bee so the bee choose to go to the painting instead of the real rose.
-There's a lion with mouth open behind the rose (bee got scared)
-The bee's enemy protect the flower
-The area at the painting is brighter than the real rose
- The bee is an artistic bee

30 Illustration on Chicken
5 Interesting Points of the Chicken:
-Put a KFC poster
-Put durians
-Put Sticky Pad
-TV to entertain them

Week 6

 Mindset

When i'm doing my school work , my stationeries will be all over the place. Although i will get annoyed when I see the stuffs lying all over the place , I just continue do my work because I think that I could clean it up later. But, after doing the presentation on how to be creative , I learn that to be creative and to let the ideas flow out , you have to make sure the surroundings you sitting at is clean and neat. I think its really work because when i'm doing my work , I didn't think of how to clean up the mess later . So , its really change my mindset
Before
 After

The other thing that I learn is to think positive all the time. I always have the mindset that i cannot draw, but I really have to think positive because I know that if we try to do it , we can .

I did a research on best presentation on TED Talks. I watched one of this very interesting topic on "How to build your creative confidence" by David Kelley.

https://youtu.be/16p9YRF0l-g

He start of by showing a mind map on what to talk about during the presentation. Although its not colourful , I think the mind map is really useful for him to summarise on his topic.

So here he is talking about that some people fear of judgement. They scared that if you don't say the right creative thing, you're going to be judge.

He is saying about the words that was told by Dr. Bandura , a psychologist. You must have a confidence which is called as self-efficacy, the sense that you can change the world and that you can attain what you set out to do. He add on that we could take people who fear of not being creative to change it to familiarity , and they surprise themselves.

There's one guy who is a technical person, he designs medical imaging equipment. He get scared of not being creative after saw a girl crying as she scared of the MRI machine. He felt disappointed because before this time he was proud of what he did but he really hurt to see that the kids are scared of the machine. So after taking classes about design process and gain confidence , he redesign the machine make it much more interesting to children.

The new MRI design for children
Overall , i think it is important to make the presentation interesting by having a great story to share if you have one. It is also good to make the viewer laugh as not to make the presentation boring.

Here are the 10 Tips on how to have a good presentation:

1. Write A Script
-Make sure your script follows good storytelling conventions
-Have a clear arc that builds towards some sort of climax.

2. One thing a time
-Plan your presentation so just one new point is displayed at any given moment.
-Bullet points can be revealed one at a time as you reach them.

3. No Paragraphs
   -Use notecards
   -Use memory

4. Pay Attention to design
-Use decorative fonts only for slide headers, and then only if they’re easy to read.
-Use a sans serif font for body text.

5. Use images sparingly
-Use images only when they add important information or make an abstract point more concrete.

6. Think outside the screen
-Give some thought to your own presentation manner how you hold yourself, what you wear, how   you move around the room.

7. Have a hook
-Open with something surprising or intriguing, something that will get your audience to sit up and  take notice.

8. Ask questions
-Build tension by posing a question and letting your audience stew a moment before moving to the next slide with the answer.

9. Modulate
-Always speak as if you were speaking to a friend, not as if you are reading off of index cards.

10. Create a Worthy Leave-Behind
-Give them something to remember you by.

Week 5

Mind Map

This week , we as a group did a mind map on "How to be creative and why?". Firstly, we list out about 20 points after that , we categorize it in different points. We have 5 points which is Physical , Self-exploration, Food , Do your own things and Adjusting the mindset. By doing this mind map, it help me to know ways on how to be creative. It is really interesting topic because when we do a research on it there's so many ways on how to be creative. I get so many tips also when doing this mind map .

Mind Map is really helpful because we get to decorate the mind map nicely and easy to understand the topic. This really summarize the topic that we are doing . No more long paragraph for me to read as the mind map really make us attracted to the colours and drawings that we do and make it more interesting. The point that I find interesting is about the foods that help us to be creative. Food like berries that is rich in antioxidants and helps to boost brain power. So , I think i can use this mind map for other topic too especially for exams as it is much more easier to understand.

5 Interesting Points of the Mind Map:

-Eat Berries ( Boost your brainpower)
-Eat Dark Chocolate ( rich in antioxidants)
-Use Green colour (change the mood)
-Physical Exercise (good ability to think flexibility)
-Don't be Perfectionist ( it can destroy the vary thing that make our work unique)

Reflection

What you learnt from Peer Assessment.

I learnt that by looking at each other blog , I get to know more interesting thing that break from normal especially from my friend who is different from my course. She shared really interesting designs that being made by other professional designers.

From my work that I had done , I get to know from my friend that I do provide evidence and reasons which I think I didn't explain it quite well . She also thinks that some of my sentence could be phrase better to make people more understand. I also get a comment that my blog is simple and easy to read as it is not that messy. I have some spelling error on my blog and I learn that before I post the entry , I have to check thoroughly and read first before post it.

By doing this , its really benefits the class as we get to share much more ideas from professional designers. By doing the Peer Assessment also , we get to know each other weakness and get comment and critic from each other. Not to forget , we get to know others opinion about our works, and know what to improve on.

Break from the normal

Coconut purse
Since our group are mainly girls , we decided to pick fashion to be one of our topic. All of us find similarity in liking purses. And one us has one cute and unique purse. The materials that are commonly used in making of bags are plastics, leathers and canvases. However the bag that Mufiqah has,  is not made from any of the materials stated above. In fact, her purse is indeed created from coconut shells. It is less common a round circular shape when it comes to designing bag. We think it could be because of its functionality to have more pockets and zips. The coconut purse only has one compartment so it might be not be practical to use. It is unique in terms of the design, no one would ever thought about designing a bag that made out of coconut .

Clock Bench
So we were strolling around 313 somerset to find something to eat, suddenly, we came across and saw this cute bench. Normally, benches are flat, plain, and simple. We find it unique as , firstly , we didn't expect a clock to be on a bench , and secondly we didn't expect a bench to be on a clock.

Eraser "penknife"
Bao was using her eraser and her friend was alarmed to see that she was using a penknife to erase her work. Her friend was surprised to see that it was indeed a eraser that  actually looks like a penknife. This invention is called the mechanical eraser stick and it works in the same way as a penknife but instead of the blade it has the eraser stick. When one thinks of an eraser, one just thinks of a round normal looking eraser. So we find this design is interesting.

Another work that was given is to illustrate 101 Ways To Cross Roads and create a story. I choose to do on sliding across the rainbow to cross the roads which I think it is an interesting point. So , here is my story.
Sally
Hi , her name is Sally. She love to go to school as she get to meet her friends and gain knowledge. She always early for school as she scared she will missed any lesson.

One day , Sally was in the bus , on her way to school. It was raining heavily . Unfortunately , there's an accident happened on the road, a car crashed into a tree. This caused a traffic jam. Sally felt so worried that she couldn't reach her school on time. She kept on looking at her watch . Her school is just across the road but the accident and the traffic jams make her impossible to cross it.

The rain has stopped. Suddenly, a beautiful rainbow appeared . When Sally saw the rainbow , she quickly get down the bus and ran towards the rainbow. She climb up the cloud and slide across the rainbow . She felt so happy that she get to cross the roads safely and get to reach school on time.

BREAK FROM THE NORMAL

I'm in Graphic Communication. So, I decided to search on 5 items that breaks from normal.

This is not a normal cheese grater. This is Cheese Grater Business Card. The company design something different to attract the buyer attention by designing a unique and creative business card. I find this is really attractive , as this business card didn't look like the normal business card which is just a piece of paper. This gave an impact to the buyer when looking at the business card.

Another item that I want to share is this straw. This is a business card too which promoting their Yoga centre. This is a creative design as the straw have a behind message of it . It trying to introduce to you their Yoga centre at the same time. This is really different from the normal business card.

This is not a pencil . This is Parmesan Pencil. The company design a packaging that is so unique and easy to be use for the user. The packaging is different from other common cheese packaging which is just in a normal box. The company didn't even make the cheese look like a cheese which is really interesting.

This cute little hanger is actually a tea bag . Normally , a tea bag will have a string on top of it but for this packaging design , the company decided to make something different . They make the tea bag looks like a clothes hanger . You can just hang the tea bag at the tip of the cup , pour the amount of water you need and enjoy it .

A Business Card balloon. These balloon are from a chest physician. This business card was design uniquely . It doesn't even look like a business card . Who would think of designing this type of business card and this is also not a normal balloon which it have message on it.

That's all about my research!
